Mayoral welcome by Cllr Guy Tirvengadum, Mayor of Kendal and the official opening ceremony of the 1st Kendal Unity Festival will take place at 10:00 am at the Abbot Hall Park, Kendal. A fun family festival with an important message will be coming to Kendal on 23 June 2018. The Kendal Unity Festival celebrates the strengths and diversity of the people of Kendal by building community cohesion, celebrating diversity, fostering good relations, tackling discrimination and promoting understanding between and within its diverse communities.
Kendal Unity Festival will run from 10am with workshops, exhibitions and demonstrations at Abbot Hall Park and Social Centre. Performances from musicians, drummers and dancers at the town’s Birdcage and at the Brewery Arts Centre are just a few of the highlights lined up.
Designed for families and people of all abilities it is an exciting opportunity for local community groups and organisations to showcase their services and projects. Providing a unique chance for people to try out, learn about and get a taste of something new.
The deadline to get involved in fast approaching. Anyone who would like to book a stall, run a workshop, provide a demonstration or perform needs to sign up by 30 April.
The event is being supported by Kendal Town Council, South Lakeland District Council, Cumbria County Council and a host of other voluntary, informal and community organisations. South Lakeland Equality and Diversity Partnership appointed AWAZ Cumbria to develop the idea following their success with similar festivals in Carlisle in 2016 and 2017.
Aftab Khan, Awaz’s Development Officer and Co-ordinator of the Kendal festival explained: “The Kendal Unity Festival celebrates the strengths and diversity of the people of Kendal by building community cohesion, celebrating diversity, fostering good relations tackling prejudice and promoting understanding between and within its diverse communities. The Festival is aimed at advancing equality, challenging prejudice and discrimination through voluntary action and active citizenship. We are sure everyone will enjoy it and there is still time to get involved. Join the fun and book a stall.”
